Charminar | Charminar History

The city of Hyderabad is a unique blend of ancient and modern eras, giving visitors a glimpse of modern buildings interconnected with the splendor of 400-year-old buildings.

It has excellent examples of Qutub Shahi architecture - Jami Masjid, Mecca Masjid, Tuli Mosque and of course Char Minar, an influential symbol of Hyderabad.

The Char Minar is a specimen of the great architecture built by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah in 1591 to mark the end of the plague inside the city. Considered the identity of the city, the Char Minar is an impressive square building made up of four minarets. Its arcades are illuminated every evening which becomes an unforgettable spectacle.

The monument consists of beautiful square granite pillars, which are built on four huge arches located in the north, south, east and west directions. These arches support two floors of rooms and a gallery of arcades. There is a small tower at each corner of the square structure which measures 24m. Is tall, so the building reaches about 54 meters high. These are the four minarets, thanks to which the building received this name. Each tower is based on the basic structure of lotus leaves, the then special motif used in Qutub Shahi buildings.

The first floor was used as a madrasa during the Qutb Shahi period. On the second floor there is a mosque in the west direction, the dome of which is visible from the road itself, if seen standing at a certain distance.

As you walk through the area of the four towers, you can marvel at the remains of history that meet the present. Towards the south-east of the Charminar is the building of the Greek Hospital of Nizamia. About 50 yards to the west is an old crumbling brown wall between the shops of Lad Bazaar which represents the entrance to Nizam's ancient Jillau Khana or parade ground.
Today, these lands are used in the development of large commercial complexes. Again, a road on the left leads to the Khilawat Complex (Chau Mahalla Palace). The Lad Bazar road ends at Mehboob Chowk where the block tower from the same period is located on a soft white mosque built in the 19th century.

Char Minar is approximately 7 km from Hyderabad Railway Station. It is 5 km from Hyderabad Bus Station. Excellent private transportation is available from all parts of both cities. The Charminar named "Arc de Triomphe de l'Orient" is the trademark of Hyderabad. These four towers as old as the city are in the middle of the old city with this building and are the mark of the Qutb Shahi era.
