Teachers' Day is observed every year on 5 September. Teachers' Day is celebrated across India on September 5 to pay their respects to teachers on the occasion of the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the former President of India.
On 5 September 1888, Dr. Radhakrishnan was born in Tirutani, a small town about 200 km northwest of Chennai. Her father's name was Sarvepalli V. Ramaswamy and mother's name was Mrs. Sita Jha.
He received his primary education from KV High School in Thiruttani, after which he moved to the Hermanberg Evangelical Lutheran Mission School in Tirupati in the year 1896.
Radhakrishnan was a bright student and received many scholarships throughout his life. He initially attended Voorhees College in Vellore but later switched to Madras Christian College. At the time, he was 17 years old. He graduated from the college in 1906 with a master's degree and was one of the college's most distinguished alumni.
Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan believed in education. He was a great philosopher and teacher. He was deeply in love with teaching. He possessed all the qualities of an ideal teacher.
He served as a professor at the Universities of Mysore (1918–21) and Calcutta (1921–31; 1937–41) and taught philosophy. Apart from this, he was Vice Chancellor of Andhra University from 1931 to 36. He was also appointed as Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics at Oxford University in England from 1936 to 52. He was Vice Chancellor of Benares Hindu University from 1939 to 48. From 1953 to 1962, he was the Chancellor of Delhi University.
Why teacher's day is celebrated on 5 September
This is in 1962, when Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan became the President of the country. After he sat on this post, some of his students requested him to celebrate his birthday on 5 September. Dr. Radhakrishnan accepted the request of his students, but kept his mind in it.
He told the students that his birthday should be celebrated as' Teachers' Day 'across the country. He is a teacher and he would be happy if all the teachers get respect and honor on his birthday. From then until today, 5 September was celebrated as Teachers' Day.
On this day special events are held for teachers in schools. In some schools, awards are also given to the best teachers. Every year on the occasion of Teachers' Day, the teachers of India and the State Governments are rewarded for their outstanding contribution in the field of education through hard work and dedication.
