Kamini Roy | Kamini Roy 155th Birth Anniversary
Kamini Roy ji who dedicated her entire life as a rights activist, an educationist and a freedom fighter to women, today, 12 October 2019, Google addressed her as a doodle to mark her 155th birth anniversary.
Kamini Roy ji was born on 12 October 1864 in Bekarganj district of Bengal. And he died in Hazaribagh in 1933. Since childhood, Kamini Roy ji always gave first place to education in life. Kamini graduated from Bethun College, Kolkata University in 1886 with Sanskrit Honors. And started teaching there the same year.
It is noteworthy that she was the first woman to graduate during colonial rule.
In 1883, during the tenure of Viceroy Lord Ripon, the Ilbert Bill was passed, according to which Indian judges were empowered to hear cases in which European citizens were involved. It was opposed by the European community but the Indians supported it, Kamini Ray was one of them.
After the death of her husband Kedarnath Roy in 1909, she joined the Bang Mahila Samiti and became fully devoted to women's issues. Kamini Roy through her poems had created awareness among women. Not only this, she then ran a long campaign to give women the right to vote in the erstwhile Bengal. Finally women were given the right to vote in the 1926 general election.
